Exploring the Mysteries of Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

History of Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

In 1880, the Pickett brothers, John and George, were on the lookout for new caves in Williams Canyon when they stumbled upon a small cave near the limestone archway. As they lit candles, they noticed that the flames flickered in the wind coming from within the cave. They crawled through a small opening and emerged into a large chamber promising an amazing world of exploration.

This world was eventually opened up by George Washington Snider, a stonecutter from Ohio. Shortly after the cave’s initial discovery, Snider excavated passages and discovered Canopy Hall. He continued to excavate, and soon after, he was giving guided tours. Cave of the Winds Mountain Park in Colorado Springs has been in continuous operation since February 1881 – it is one of Colorado’s original visitor attractions!
